I Received a Letter from the Medical Advisory Board… Do I Need a Lawyer?
Over the last few years, anecdotally, we have seen an explosion in clients being referred to the Medical Advisory Board. Most of our clients have never heard of the Medical Advisory Board (MAB) of the MVA until they are referred to it. What is the MAB? The MAB is a board comprised of physicians and medical professionals specializing in various areas of medicine. They work closely with the MVA to ensure that a driver is capable of safely operating a motor vehicle.
What most people don’t realize is that a referral from the MAB can come from almost anywhere. At Cochran & Chhabra, we have seen referrals come from judges, police officers, doctors, and even private citizens. A referral can be made if someone suspects you have a drug or alcohol problem, a medical or mental health condition that affects your ability to drive, or even after an accident if you seem confused or “out of it.” A referral to the Medical Advisory Board can result in an emergency suspension of your license or a request for re-examination (with suspension of your driver’s license looming if you don’t comply with re-examination).
At Cochran & Chhabra, we get phone calls from clients at all stages of the Medical Advisory Board process. Some clients call us immediately upon receiving a letter from the MVA stating that their license is going to be suspended, other clients call us after they have spent several months, and in some cases years, going through the process of submitting medical documents back to the MVA, re-taking driving classes, driving tests, and submitting to other MVA testing, undergoing medical evaluations, and being evaluated by various doctors.
In our experience, the sooner that you can get an attorney involved in the process, the better. Once the Medical Advisory Board process has gone on for a long time, it can become exponentially more difficult to help a client dig their way out of.
At Cochran & Chhabra, we have successfully assisted our clients in getting their driving privileges restored expeditiously after a MAB referral is made. Call or text us today at 410-268-5515 if you or a loved one needs help with the MAB.
